Google Business in Tenerife: what to check before investing in advertising
For restaurants, tourism businesses and accommodation providers: review your profile and the steps customers take to contact you before bringing in more traffic.
Someone looking for a restaurant in Arona, an excursion or a place to stay needs to understand what you offer, where to find you and how to contact you. If your opening hours or links are wrong, an ad will not remove that obstacle. Start with the Google Business Profile your customers actually see on Search and Maps.
Your profile and your ads have different roles
A paid campaign does not improve organic rankings. Google lists relevance, distance and prominence among the main factors in local results: keeping your profile up to date does not guarantee the top spot.
1. Who can manage the profile
Check that you can access the profile and know who owns it. If the business has not been verified, follow the process Google provides. To get help from a colleague or collaborator, invite them as a manager: everyone signs in with their own account, without sharing passwords.
2. Your name, category and actual business
Compare the name with your signage and website. Locations, offers or promotional wording that are not part of your real business name can cause problems with the guidelines. Choose specific categories relevant to the services you provide, starting with your main business activity.
3. Your address and map pin
Check how a customer would reach your business. If you work at customers’ locations and do not receive customers at your own premises, your address should be hidden. For an excursion, clearly explain the meeting point; before using it as your profile address, check that the location is eligible under Google’s rules.
4. Opening hours customers can rely on
Review your customer-facing hours, where applicable to your category, and update seasonal opening times, closures and special dates. For a restaurant or tourism business, compare what appears on Google with your website and booking system.
5. Phone, website and bookings
Open the profile on a smartphone and test the contact options and links actually available. Is the phone answered? Does the website open? Is it clear how to ask for information or make a booking? Buttons and features vary by business and setup: check the actual steps your customer needs to take.
6. Photos that show the experience
Choose genuine, current photos that show what customers will find: your premises, entrance, activity or experience. Check that they are clear on a phone and that you have the necessary permissions to use them. This is a check for clarity, without promises about rankings.
7. Genuine reviews and replies
Invite real customers to share their experience using your profile’s link or QR code. Avoid offering discounts or other benefits in exchange for reviews. Write relevant replies while protecting customers’ personal details.
8. What to measure
Choose a concrete goal: an enquiry or a confirmed booking. The metrics available for verified profiles vary according to the features available. Clicks on your website or call button do not, on their own, prove that a booking was made or a call was completed. Compare them with the enquiries you receive; the data may include both organic and Ads interactions.
Where to start
- Fix access issues and essential business information.
- Use a phone to test every step up to contacting the business.
- Fix links or information that create uncertainty.
- Decide how to identify a useful enquiry before setting up the campaign.
If you find an error that prevents customers from contacting you, fix that first. Once the steps are clear, you can assess a campaign against an agreed goal and budget. Keep a record of your changes so you can interpret the results in context.
